Ever watch Grey's Anatomy, Nurse Jackie, House, or other television shows that seem to portray an inaccurate depiction of a nurse?  How often do you personally experience the misconception that nurses “do what doctors tell them to”? The nursing shortage is a public health crisis that is one of the biggest dangers for patients and the public at large. Media products have long shaped and reinforced inaccurate perceptions about the nature of nursing work. Public health research shows that even entertainment media products have a significant effect on how people think and act with regard to health care. By reconsidering how our society thinks and acts toward nursing, we can empower nurses to improve safety for patients, reduce turnover, and enhance public health. Explore some overlooked roots of the nursing crisis and its effects, and learn ways you and other nurses can help.  This is a Gannett Education CE event. Participants who attend the webinar and complete an evaluation will earn 1.0 contact hours of continuing nursing education.

Sandy Summers is Executive Director of The Truth About Nursing. Since 2001 she has led the effort to change how the world views nursing by challenging damaging media depictions of nurses. Ms. Summers is the co-author of Saving Lives: Why the Media's Portrayal of Nursing Puts Us All at Risk. Her media advocacy work began when she and fellow Johns Hopkins graduate students began the movement in April 2001. She speaks frequently on nursing's image and empowering nurses to change how they are perceived. Ms. Summers has Masters Degrees in Nursing and Public Health from Johns Hopkins University (2002). She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Southern Connecticut State University in 1984. Ms. Summers is a member of Sigma Theta Tau, the international nursing honor society, and Delta Omega, the public health honor society.

2. Receive an email with a link to confirm your “seat” reservation.  There are a limited number of seats for each webinar so please be sure to open the email, click the link, and reserve your seat.
   
3. After reserving your seat you will receive an email from GoToWebinar with more details about the webinar event.
4. The day prior and the hour prior to the webinar you should receive reminder emails with links to launch the webinar.
5. You should log on the webinar at least 10-15 minutes before the event begins so you will have ample time to download the webinar client and log on.
6. If you are unable to attend the live session, please visit Nurse.com 2-3 days after the event to view the recording. You will still be able to earn CE credit after the live event.
